The Vipers returned to winning ways against a strong Cramlington Town team. Another steady start from the Vipers meant the match remained close until the third quarter. Reece opened the scoring but Cramlington soon equalised. A revitalised Swailesy then stepped up to score a brace to secure an excellent victory.
Man of the match: Jack Swailes

Following our openning league match against this team the Vipers arrived determined to ensure they competed well.
It was a very close match that could have gone either way. Vipers had numerous spellis of pressure but just couldn't test the CJ enough to press on for a victory.
Man of the match: James Kirby

The Vipers turned up following an epic win over WBFC. It was a windy day but bright. The match started with both teams weighing each other up. The Vipers were clearly tired in their second big game in two days but kept on battling. Both teams had spells of pressure but couldn't break the deadlock. The game was decided when the ball was kicked out of ace keeper Ethan's hands and bundled in to the back of the net.
Man of the match: Jack Langhorne

The Vipers entered this late stage of the cup following an epic win over Premiership team Walker Central. That match was close and took resilience, strength and a fantastic team spirit to prosper. It was a fantastic game to watch and put the Vipers in the next round (the last 16 teams) way beyond their seeded entry position. One more victory and the Vipers would fight their way in to the quarter finals of the prestigious league cup.
As always the Vipers didn’t receive an easy draw in the cup. Opponents, top of the table Whitley Bay FC Barca, turned up at Bedlington High School on a bright and warm March day. The Vipers arrived in high spirits , sporting their stylish tournament strip and clearly not overwhelmed by the grandeur of the occasion. Surely if the Vipers could sneak this game it would be one of the biggest victories in their short history..??
The match kicked off with Langhy eagerly waiting on the bench. Keeping the goal safe was Ethan, James and Francey. Maybe the fastest midfields in the division of Sam, Owen and Reece took to the field. Striker Swailsely led the attack. The first quarter saw both teams looking to play positive football. The Vipers had the best of the quarter with several good chances and looked like they were ready to fight for a result. Chances came and went but the quarter ended 0-0.
The second quarter saw bite yer ankles Langhorne take to the pitch and Jack France moved up front as striker. The Vipers looked to build on a solid first quarter. Jack France took his opportunity up front to remind us of his creativity and ability to boss the oppositions defenders. Reece who controlled most of the first quarter down the left continued where he left off. Sam was winning every ball in midfield to stop Whitley Bay in their tracks. The defence of Langhy and James looked strong and keen to maintain their run of clean sheets. It was from a glorious pacey run down the left wing from Reece that brought the first goal. Reece beat his man with an excellent run which was over half the length of the pitch, cut in to the box then slotted away a hugely important first goal. 1-0 Vipers! The Vipers finished the quarter strongly maintaining their lead.
The third quarter saw a vibrant Vipers team demonstrate how far they have developed over the season. Every 50:50 ball was won, every tackle was strong, the passing was intelligent and the 12 ½ minute quarter was a pure joy to watch for the on looking Viper clan. Owen had played a confident match so far but it was in this quarter we saw his true quality and strength. Swailesy looked lively and at home up front - making a perfectly timed run he was able to confidently slot the ball in to the bottom corner beyond the Whitley Bay keeper. 2-0 Vipers!! The Vipers were unstoppable now and they knew it! The next attack saw the team progress in to the Whitley half. Another ball across in to the box saw Whitley try to clear their lines but Owen fixed his eyes on the ball and planted an excellent header in to the corner of the goal. 3-0 Vipers!!!! Manager, coach and parents were now looking on with absolute pride. The quarter wasn’t finished and the pressure on Whitley Bay was maintained. Sam had the central midfield under complete control. The next attack saw the wingers scream forward drawing the opposition deep. Sam looked around to pick out the correct pass but realised a 25 yard shot was the way to go. He was right. The ball was hit expertly and screamed in to the top corner. 4-0 to the Vipers.
Throughout the whole match the team were able attack with confidence knowing that Ethan, Langhy, James (not to mention Francey and Swailsey) were there to mop up any attack. Ethan’s hands were safe as houses as per usual! At the end of the third quarter the boys were naturally exhausted. Langhy was brought back in to the back line. James was rested and Owen was handed the captain’s armband. David asked the team to protect the clean sheet not forgetting that Whitley Bay are a highly competent and strong team. They are know from strong performances in the last quarter. The Vipers completed the perfect performance in the final quarter by battling hard together to keep Whitley’s repeated attacks out. At the other end Owen nearly scored another belting header having ghosted in to meet a clever Swailsey cross. His effort smacked against the post come crossbar. A truly great cup game for the Vipers ended 4-0.
Whitley Bay FC Whites await us in the quarter finals..... In the words of Delia Smith “Lets me ‘avin’ you!!!”
Man of the Match: Sam Richardson

Sunday’s match involved the Vipers making probably their longest away trip of the season to Longhoughton for a repeat of last weeks match. The match was slightly different from the usual match as it was played on a 3G pitch with goals which were about 3 foot wider than usual. Given the size of the goals, David and Allan encouraged the lads to have a few shots from distance but reminded them of the importance of closing down any space Rangers might have outside the box, thereby minimising the chances they might be able to create.
Having recovered from last weeks illness, Langhy started alongside James as the last line of defence for Ethan’s goal with Sam, Owen & Reece in midfield looking to create the chances for Francey up front.
The Vipers kicked off the first quarter & had soon forced the first corner; Reece attacked the Rangers defence at pace and forced the defender to put the ball behind. From the resultant corner, Longhoughton broke quickly and it took a strong tackle from Sam on the edge of the Vipers box to stop the Ranger’s player getting a strike on goal. Longhoughton had started the game strongly and were trying to take advantage of the larger goals by having striking shots from distance & it took the strong hands of Ethan to deny a Longhoughton midfielder who’d hit a powerful drive from outside the box. From the resultant corner, Owen showed great strength to try and run the ball clear but it took a fantastic clearance from the Langster to finally clear the danger. Again Longhoughton pressurised for the opening goal & it took a brilliantly timed challenge from Owen to deny Rangers a strike at goal and keep the match goal less at the end of the quarter.
Swailsey started the second quarter up front, Owen switching to the left wing & Jack France moving to the wide right position. The Vipers tried to get more into the game as an attacking force and the early exchanges were more even, Longhoughton hitting the bar after a great bit of skill down the right & the Rangers keeper pulling off a good save from a drive from Sam from the edge of the box. The Rangers keeper was also quick off his line to deny Swailsey as he raced towards goal. However, the Vipers were not to be denied – in an almost identical move, Sam lofted a pass for Jack Swailes to run onto. Jack was onto it like a flash & again the keeper was equal to his shot but this time the ball fell to Jack France who lofted a lovely shot over the backpedalling keeper & into the roof of the net to give the Vipers a 1-0 lead. The chances were coming thick and fast at both ends now – a Longhoughton player demonstrating great control and skill on the right hand side to fashion half a chance which he struck against the bar & Sam was unfortunate to see his shot from the edge of the box drift by the far post. Captain Kirbs and Langhy, aided by the hard working midfield, were showing great commitment and determination in repelling the Longhoughton attacks but it took a couple of great saves from Eth to preserve the Vipers lead at the half way point.
Reece returned for the 3rd quarter, with Swailsey dropping back into defence with James. The Vipers looked to maintain the momentum they’d built and from an Owen throw inside the Vipers half, Sam showed great strength to hold off a couple of challenges before exchanging passes with Francey down the right hand side. Unfortunately, Sam couldn’t manage a shot and the Rangers defence cleared quickly, looking to take advantage of the space. Fortunately, Swailsey was on hand to make an elegant, and timely, sliding interception to avert the danger. Owen showed some great skill on the wing to bamboozle the Longhoughton defence & managed to force a corner. At the other end, James made a great clearance but it took another fantastic save from Eth, this time diving low to his left, to make sure the lads kept their lead at the end of the quarter.
Straight from the kick off of the final quarter the Vipers increased their lead. Sam played the ball wide to Owen, who looked up and picked out Reece’s run. Without breaking stride, Reece struck a tremendous shot from well out side the box into the roof of the net to make it 2-0 to the Vipers. To Longhougton’s credit, they didn’t let their heads drop and kept pressurising for the goal that would get them back into the game. However, the lads were showing great determination and battling all over the pitch, not wanting to let Longhoughton gain any advantage. This teamwork was best demonstrated when Eth pulled off the save of the match, diving to his right, to keep out the Rangers attack. However, the ball broke to an oncoming midfielder and it took a brave block from Sam to stop his shot from being on target. Still the danger wasn’t cleared and, as Longhoughton looked to swing the ball back into the Vipers box, Owen made a vital block – teamwork indeed!! Still the chances came at both ends, James making a great interception and Eth another save, whilst the Longhoughton keeperjust managed to keep out Reece’s effort with an outstretched toe. Despite the excitement, neither side managed to score any more goals and the match ended with the Vipers winning 2-0.
Man of the Match - Owen Holliday

After last weeks excellent win against a strong , physical Blyth Rangers side, the lads met at Bedlington High for their match against Longhoughton Rangers on a bright and sunny and fresh Sunday morning.
Despite the Langster suffering from a wheezy chest, David and Allan had a full squad to choose from. With Langhy not feeling 100%, the Vipers started with Swailsey up front; Owen, Sam and Reece across midfield and Captain Kirbs and Francey protecting Ethan’s goal.
Right from the kick off the Vipers looked to take the game to Longhoughton, Sam attempting to play the ball behind the Rangers defence for Owen to run onto. At the other end, Ethan needed to be alert to thwart a quick Rangers attack with a smart save. Swailsey was next to test the Longhoughton keeper, cutting in from the right and hitting a well struck shot that the keeper did well to save. The game was developing into a real end to end encounter, with both sides covering loads of ground on a big pitch. Just before the end of the quarter Longhoughton took the lead when a Rangers midfielder managed to break through to find himself with only Ethan to beat; a low drive just managing to squeeze past Eth’s outstretched right hand.
The second quarter started in the same vein as the first – it was real end to end stuff but, thanks to James and Jack France commanding the Rangers attack, the Vipers were creating the better chances. Reece was unlucky to see his shot from outside the box drift just past the top corner of the goal. Owen was lively, cutting in from the right but the keeper was equal to his shot. Despite all the pressure, the Vipers just couldn’t find the final killer pass to allow them top level the scores and it remained 1-0 to Longhoughton at the half way point
It was in the third quarter where the lads really took control of the game. The Rangers keeper was kept busy as he pulled off excellent saves from both Swailsey and Reece. Sam was being very competitive in midfield, running endlessly from end to end to link defence and attack. It was Sam’s tenacity that brought the equalizer, robbing a Longhoughton midfielder of the ball before striding into the box and planting a well struck shot past the Rangers keeper; 1-1. The excitement didn’t end there as both sides had chances to take the lead – Longhoughton unlucky when their striker rounded Eth but couldn’t direct the ball into the empty goal and Sam struck a shot wide from a similar situation to his goal.
It was all to play for in the final quarter of such an exciting match. Swailsey and James were excellent in defence and this, along with the work rate of the midfield limited Rangers to long range shots. Again the Vipers created the best chances but just couldn’t the killer pass to create the chance to beat the Longhoughton keeper and the match, which had been an excellent and enthralling game, ended 1-1.
Man of the Match: Sam Richardson

The Vipers were back to business following the big freeze with a home match at the Hartlands. The weather was mild and the spirits high as the lads turned up clearly in the correct frame of mind and with a great positive attitude. The Vipers were joined on the pitch by referee Stu Richardson who handled a fast moving and physical game extremely well.
Like previous matches between these two sides the games was a cracker.
The teams lined up with goalkeeping ace Ethan in nets, Langhy and Captain Kirbz in defence, Reece, Sam and Jack France across the midfield – and Master Swailes up front. The first quarter kicked off with the Vipers looking to play a positive and attacking game. Reece was up for this game having narrowly missing out on a hat trick the last time the teams met. The match was only three minutes old when the watching Viper fans saw Reece make one of his typical lightning fast runs down the left wing. Even with the ball at his feet his pace carried him passed two Blyth players. Once hitting the bi-line a cheeky dink inside took him passed a couple more players but even at an acute angle Reece dispatched a tidy finish in to the bottom right corner, BANG 1-0 to the Vipers. The quarter continued in the same vein with both teams looking to break each other down. The midfield continued to operate as a team putting together some attractive moves. Jack France was causing the defence problems putting in some classy and cultured passes to his colleagues. The defence stood firm under pressure with Langhy making some last ditch defending to stop Blyth scoring what looked like a sure goal. The quarter ended 1-0.
In the following quarters we saw the introduction of Owen’s strength and tenacity on the right. Jack France had a spell up front and in defence demonstrating his skill in a variety of positions which is vital to his manager. The midfield battle continued between Sam and a strong Blyth midfielder. Sam was winning the battle for supremacy in that fight which gave the Vipers the platform to continue to press. James in defence, as we’ve come to expect, became a brick wall in front of Blyth. In the third quarter Swailesy began to cause the Blyth defence some real problems and came close to scoring twice after some great runs.
Naturally when trying to protect a slender lead Blyth did have their chances. The pressure grew towards the end. The Vipers were resilient and the whole team had to work as a unit to defend. This was underpinned by the Vipers last line of defence Ethan. To say he pulled of a save of the season is not an exaggeration. This was followed later in the game by and even better save. Unreal. Ethan was vocal and commanded his box well.
The Vipers won which is fantastic against such strong opposition. David and Allan we equally as pleased with the clean sheet. This was only achieved by superb goalkeeping, strong defending, the midfield players tracking back (on a huge pitch) and with the attacking player providing an outlet.
Final score 1-0 to the Vipers. A great match to watch and a really pleasing performance for a variety of reason. Well done the Vipers.
Man of the Match: Ethan Poland
An overnight frost left the match in doubt but thanks to some hard work from Allan & David scraping the goalmouths, the Vipers game against the table topping Whitley Bay FC Barca was able to go ahead.
David started with a solid defensive line of Eth, Langhy and Captain Kirbs, Sam in midfield with Reece & Owen looking to use their wing wizardry to create chances for Swailsey. The lads got the match underway and the opening exchanges were fairly even, both teams forcing a couple of early corners. The Vipers almost made a breakthrough when a Swailsey shot forced a great save from the Barca keeper. The lads kept up the pressure with a lovely one-two between Sam and Jack Swailes but as Sam bore down on goal, the keeper came out and smothered the ball. Whitley Bay struck back with some fine passing and Owen showed great strength and determination to get back and break up the attack, putting the ball out for a corner. As a result, neither side managed to break the deadlock and the first quarter ended 0-0.
At the start of the second half Sam struck a defence splitting pass through to Swailsey. Jack took a touch and hit a low shot which the keeper was equal too, and in the goalmouth scramble that followed, Barca managed to make a desperate goal line clearance to keep their goal intact. Barca took the lead when the Vipers failed to clear a corner and the centre forward showed great strength to hold off a couple of challenges and smashed the ball into the roof of the net; 1-0 to Whitley Bay. As the quarter drew to a close, Barca tried to build on this lead and put the Vipers defence under a prolonged period of pressure. Looking to clear his lines, Owen caught a Barca player on the edge of the box and the referee awarded a penalty. However, another fantastic save by the penalty king Eth, meant the score remained 1-0 at the half way pint of the match.
Despite chances being at a premium for the lads in the third quarter, both sides continued to be evenly matched. The defence of Francey and James stood tall against the Barca attack, with Langhy making a couple of excellent clearances under pressure. The midfield were also defending resolutely - Reece running the whole length of the pitch to thwart a Whitley Bay break away. David made a couple of tactical reshuffles in the final quarter and it was through one of these that the Vipers scored an excellent, well deserved, equaliser. Reece, now playing as centre forward, played the ball to Francey on the left wing and peeled away towards the box, taking the defender with him. Jack France sprinted towards goal, evaded a couple of challenges and nut-megged the Barca keeper, to leave the final score 1-1.
Man of the Match - James Kirby

After last weeks postponement, the lads returned to action with a cup match against Premiership team Walker Central as the first part of a double match weekend.
The match started with the Eth in goal, the Langster and Captain Kirbs in defence, Owen and Reece on the wings, Sam in the middle of midfield and Swailsey up front. Right from the off the lads made their intentions clear – they were going to attack Walker with pace and conviction, using the trickery on the wings at every opportunity. Reece was the first to test the Walker defence with a lightening attack down the left and, cutting in from the wing was unlucky when his cross evaded everyone in the box. Next it was Sam and Owen’s turn to put the Walker defence under pressure – Sam releasing Owen for a typical jinky run which was followed by a lovely cross that split the defence and caught the keeper out of position. Swailsey was onto the through ball in a flash but couldn’t force the ball over the line and the keeper got back to smother the ball on the line. When Walker did advance towards the Vipers goal, James and Jack were in uncompromising mood, giving the attackers no joy. Despite the chances the lads created, the first quarter ended 0-0.
Jack France and Ben started the second quarter but neither of them, nor the rest of the team, could do anything when a Walker corner was caught by the wind and sailed into the top corner of the net ; 0-1 to Walker. This setback just spurred the lads on and after a good ball out of defence by James, Sam drove towards the Walker goal. The keeper was off his line quickly and managed to get something on Sam’s shot but could only push the ball towards the wing where Ben stroked the ball into the net, cool as you like; 1-1. Both sides were showing commitment and determination but neither managed to score any more goals in the second quarter.
The game was turning into a real end to end match, neither side wanting to allow the other to gain the advantage. However, it was the Vipers that took the lead in the third quarter through Reece, with a typical direct run and clinical finish into the bottom corner; 2-1 to the Vipers!!
Straight from the kick off, Walker looked to get back into the game, moving their strongest (and largest!!) player into attack. Thanks to the resolute defending of Langhy, Swailsey, Kirbs and Francey, the attackes were repelled and any shots Walker managed to get on target were dealt with, expertly, by Goalie Polie. This determined defending resulted in the lads leading 2-1 at the end of the quarter.
The first three quarters had been exciting with some lovely play and no quarter being asked, nor given, by either side. However, it was the fourth quarter when the game ignited; Walker made the game 2-2 when the lads failed to clear the ball but it still took an unlucky deflection off Sam’s heel to beat Eth. Soon after it was 3-2 to Walker when one of their midfielders picked up the ball outside the box and unleashed a fierce curling shot into the corner of the net. Lesser teams would have crumbled after seeing a lead quickly turned into a deficit – but the Vipers are made of sterner stuff than that. A quick regroup and vocal encouragement from everyone and they were straight back on the attack. Reece jinked down the wing and poked the ball to Owen who somehow managed to smuggle the ball over the line and even the scores at 3-3 at the end of normal time – what a match!
A quick 5 minute extra time couldn’t produce another goal for either side so the match was to be decided by the drama of penalties; Ethan saved all – that’s five!!! – of the Walker penalties and Reece was as cool as a cucumber as sent the keeper the wrong way and stroked the ball into the bottom corner to give the Vipers a memorable victory.
Man of the Match: Each and every one of the lads played a huge part in the victory but keeping out 5 penalties takes a special keeper – step forward Ethan Poland!!

The second match of the weekend double header saw the Vipers travel to Cramlington on a cold wet and windy day. After the previous days excellent, but tiring, result, the lads were in for another tough match against a well established Seria A side, whose manager was disappointed they hadn’t made it into the Premiership. With Ben missing, David went with the same team that had started the previous day, with Jack France being the unlucky one to miss out on a start.
The lads started strongly again and some direct running and great interplay from the midfield trio of Owen, Reece and Sam forced the Cramlington defence on the backfoot, forcing a succession of corners. From one of these, Swailsey delivered a peach of a cross and Sam, having lost his marker, met it with a powerful header which smacked against the post. At the back, Kirbs and Langhy were showing great commitment in keeping the Crammy attack at bay but they could do nothing when a ferocious shot struck Owen on the hand and the ref awarded a penalty. The Cramlington midfielder struck the penalty hard and low but Eth sprung to his right to make a majestic save and make it six penalty saves out of six for the weekend – which meant the score was 0-0 at the end of the first quarter.
After the great passing of the first quarter, the lads resorted to running with the ball in the second quarter. As a result, Cramlington had more time to snuff out the Viper attacks. Getting a better grip of the midfield allowed Crammy to put the Vipers defence under pressure, meaning Francey and Kirbs had to be alert and determined to stop Cramlington taking the lead. Looking to cut out a dangerous cross, Sam was unlucky when the ball struck his arm and the referee awarded another penalty. Despite a tremendous dive and strong hands from Eth to keep it out, the ball was struck so hard, it ended up in the net; 1-0 to Crammy at the end of the second quarter.
Before the third quarter, David and Allan reinforced the need for the Vipers to get back to quick, accurate passing. Any thoughts of the lads being tired from the previous days match were quickly dispelled as it was Cramlington who started to tire, allowing the lads a bit more space in midfield. The Langster and James were providing a solid foundation which allowed the midfield and Jack Swailes to attack but they just couldn’t find the final, killer pass to create a chance to make it all square. Against the run of play, Cramlington extended their leads when a well struck shot from the edge of the box beat Ethan and extended the Cramlington lead to 2-0 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, it was all the Vipers – Langhy, Swailsey and Kirbs were solid in defence and, with their passing game restored, the midfield were pulling all the strings against a tiring Cramlington. Up front, Jack France was making a nuisance of himself, looking to stretch the defence. Despite all their pressure, the lads just couldn’t find the breakthrough and from a quick counter attack, Cramlington delivered the final blow when a good ball into the box was bundled over the line to make the final score 3-0.
The score doesn’t reflect how the lads performed in the match – for the second time over the weekend the boys had given a good account of themselves against a team with more experience of playing at this level. With a little bit more luck, the result could have been so different but the experience and confidence to know that they can compete will help them in the matches to come – GO VIPERS!!!

The Vipers made the short trip to Ashington for the last of their Under 9 friendlies, knowing a win would make it lucky 7 wins for the lads. After the two previous arctic weekend weather, the wind had relented and the temperatures were mild – much to the relief of the players, management and supporters!!
The Vipers kicked off the first quarter with Swailsey leading the line, Sam, Owen and the Reester in midfield, Catain Kirbs and the Langster defending – all being backed up by the safe and capable goalkeeping of Eth. Straight from the kick off, when Swailsey played in Owen on the right, the lads were on the front foot looking to unlock the Phoenix defence. Despite a very heavy pitch, the lads were looking to put the training ground manoeuvres into practice, with quick passes and good movement. Several times the Vipers went close but couldn’t quite make the break through. At the other end, Eth demonstrated how safe his hands are to hold onto a well struck shot from the Ashington number 2. Again the lads were using the pace on the wings to try and gain the advantage and a lovely pass from Owen set Sam free just inside the Phoenix box. Sam jinked passed a couple of Phoenix defenders and had a shot on goal, which was well saved by the keeper. However, the keeper hadn’t managed to hold the shot and Sam dispatched the rebound into the back of the net: 1-0 to the Vipers. Both Langhy and James were alert to the few attacks Phoenix could muster, showing great strength and commitment in the tackle. From one of these rare attacks the ball went out for a goal kick to the Vipers – Eth took the kick, left footed to Sam in central midfield; Sam controlled it and played a ball in behind the midfielder for Reece to run onto; using his lightening pace, Reece blasted past the defender and layed the ball off for Swailsey to smash the ball past the Phoenix keeper to extend the Vipers lead to 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Ben came on for Reece in the second quarter and Francey replaced Langhy with Swailsey dropping back into defence. James and Swailsey needed to be on their toes as Ashington looked to reduce the deficit straight from the kick off. Having averted this danger the Vipers took control of the quarter with some excellent triangular passing and movement – one inter change of passes from Owen and Sam on the right had the Phoenix midfield chasing shadows – which created several chances. Ben took full advantage and scored two quick goals to extend the Vipers lead to 4-0 – nothing less than their play deserved!! There was still time for the lads to show their growing confidence with an intelligent corner from Francey picking out Sam on the edge of the box – unfortunately, he couldn’t direct his first time shot on target.
For the third quarter, Reece came on for Owen with two of the three Jacks swapping places – Langhy replacing Swailsey. Right from the off the lads looked to extend their lead – again good passing and direct play carving the Phoenix apart. Ben was on fire with his intelligent play; receiving the ball on the half way line he set off towards the Ashington goal, beat a couple of defenders and smashed a shot goal wards., which hit a defender. Ben was first to react and hit a delightful lob over the Phoenix keeper and defence for an exquisite goal to get his hat-trick; 5-0 to the Vipers.
The final quarter saw Sam and James withdrawn, with Swailsey returning to defence and Owen taking up the central midfield role. All the running on a heavy pitch was starting to tire the lads and, despite some valiant defending from Langhy and Swailsey and some brave goalkeeping from Ethan, Ashington scored 2 quick goals to reduce the deficit to 5-2. The lads were finding it difficult to break the pressure for any lengthy period of time and were looking to use the pace on the wings as much as possible. From a great clearance by Langhy, Reece picked up the ball on the right hand side and strode out of the Vipers half. Outpacing the Phoenix defence, he exploded into the box, sidestepped another defender and fired a low shot into the bottom corner to make the final score 6-2 to the Vipers.
A great result that means the lads won 50% of their games and finished 7th in a very strong friendly league.
Man of the Match: Jack Langhorne

For the third match in a row the Vipers were at home at the Hartlands. Unfortunately for everyone, for the second match in a row the weather had decided winter had definitely arrived with freezing temperatures and a biting wind.
Despite the cold weather, the lads started brightly straight from the start of the first quarter , the midfield trio of Reece, Sam and Owen looking to support Swailsey upfront and to stop Porto threatening the back line of James, the Langster and “super glue gloves” Eth. The pace and trickery of Owen and Reece on the wings was causing the Porto defence all sorts of problems but it was the quick feet of Sam that created the first goal, waltzing round a defender and picking out Swailsey, who duly dispatched a low shot past the Porto keeper to give the Vipers the lead: 1-0 to the lads. The boys didn’t rest on their lead and looked to extend their lead straight away and it wasn’t long before the next goal came – Reece cutting in from the left with pace to beat the keeper with a great shot; 2-0 to the Vipers at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter continued in much the same vein as the first – Eth and the defence having very little to do but keeping their concentration and focus well to snuff out the few attacks Whitley Bay mustered. The midfield of Ben, Reece and Sam were causing the Porto defence all sorts of problems with some great passing moves and quick feet and it was Ben who made it 3-0. The lads were totally dominating the game and it was soon 4-0 when Francey latched onto a ball just outside the Porto box and gave the keeper no chance with a smart finish.
The third quarter was a more even affair, with Porto trying to get back into the game and reduce the deficit. However, some great defensive play by the whole team, but especially Langhy, James and Swailsey, minimised any chances and kept Eth’s goal intact. However, despite this newly found adventure from Porto, the Vipers still extended their lead to 5-0 with a great finish, and even better karate-style celebration, from Owen. They were also unlucky not to make it 6-0 when a great header by Swailsey beat the keeper but couldn’t beat the post and the quarter ended with the Vipers leading 5-0.
The pattern of the first half was repeated right from the start of the final quarter; Sam threading a lovely pinpoint pass through the Porto defence for Swailsey to run onto – Jack took a touch and beat the keeper with a powerful shot. Jack then got another quick goal to complete his hat-trick before Reece set off on a winding run down the left wing, cut into the Porto box and somehow managed to smuggle the ball passed the defence and keeper to make it 8-0. Whitley Bay got a consolation goal with a fantastic shot which gave Ethan no chance and sparked wild celebrations by the Porto supporters, but the lads were not yet finished and there was still time for Jack France to get his second of the match to make the final score 9-1 to the Vipers.
Man of the Match: Ben Marley

It was a windy, windy morning as the lads assembled at the Hartlands to welcome Ponteland Madrid for Sundays match. Jack France returned from illness so David and Allan had a full squad to choose from. The Vipers started with Ethan in goal, protected by the Langster and Captain Kirbs in defence, Sam in the central midfield, Ben and Reece patrolling the wings and Owen leading the forward line.
Kicking into the wind in the first quarter the lads looked to keep the ball on the floor and use the space available. The wind was to play a big factor in the match and it took both sides most of the first quarter to get to grips with the impact it was having on the match. As a result, the quarter was an even contest and despite some good attacking play down the wings, clear chances were minimal and it ended 0-0.
For the second quarter, Swailsey stepped into defence and Francey took up the striking duties, with Ben being substituted as he was ill. Madrid started the quarter strongly and the defence had to be alert to clear the danger – James showing his usual determination to win the ball. Midway through the quarter one of the Ponteland midfielders hit a well struck cross into the Vipers box. The ball held up in the wind and sailed into the top corner of the goal, giving Ethan no chance; 1-0 to Madrid. Straight from the kick off the lads pushed for the equaliser and forced Ponteland back into their own half with some good pressure. This concerted pressure paid off when Jack France intercepted a goal kick, took a touch and smashed the ball back past the Madrid keeper to equalise; 1-1. The game was now end to end, both sides pushing to take the lead. Unfortunately for the Vipers, Madrid picked up a loose ball in the box and forced the ball past Ethan to make it 2-1 to Madrid at half time.
Langhy returned to defence for the start of the second half and showed good strength and awareness to help clear a couple of Madrid attacks. At the other end, the Vipers created a couple of half chances but any clear strikes on goal were well saved by the Ponteland keeper, who was having a good game. Madrid got a free kick near the right byline, midway inside the Vipers half and their midfielder crossed the ball into the box. The ball evaded everyone, attackers and defenders, and sneaked into the bottom right hand corner to extend Madrid’s lead to 3-1 at the end of the third quarter.
To the lads credit, they came out all guns blazing for the final quarter and carved through the Ponteland defence to create several great chances to reduce the deficit. However, due to the impact of the wind and some excellent saves and confident handling from the Ponteland keeper, the Vipers could not reduce the deficit and the game ended 3-1 to Madrid.
Man of the Match: James Kirby

After a well deserved break, the Vipers returned to action on Sunday for an unusual afternoon kick off at their third home pitch of the season. Their opponents were North Shields Ospreys who had beat the lads twice in the U8 league last year, so the lads had a point to prove.
Francey was missing due to illness & the Vipers lined up for the first quarter with Eth in goal, Langhy and James in defence, Reece, Owen and Sam patrolling the midfield & Swailsey up front. Straight away the boys looked to use the space available on the bigger Hartlands pitch, exploiting the explosive pace of Reece on the left and the twisting, turning trickery of Owen on the right. Despite some smart play from both sides, there were few clear cut chances and the quarter ended 0-0.
Ben took up his position for the second quarter on the right hand side of midfield, with Owen moving into attack and Swailsey dropping back into defence. The Ospreys kicked off looking to break the deadlock with some strong midfield play and slick passing but the Vipers midfield and defence stood up well to the pressure to limit any chances that the Ospreys created. When North Shields did break the Vipers defensive line, they found Eth in majestic form, showing great awareness and bravery to rush from his line and clear any danger. Again the lads looked to use Reece’s pace and skill down the left and after a trademark lightening break down the left, Reece crossed for Owen to sweep the ball past the Ospreys keeper and celebrate in his usual acrobatic manner: 1-0 to the Vipers. The lads looked to extend their lead but were conscious of their defensive responsibilities with both Swailsey and James getting in some bone crunching tackles to stop the Ospreys attack. This resolute defending paid dividends as an Ospreys throw level with the edge of the Vipers box was headed clear by Sam. What followed next was a testament to how far the lads have come on this season, with arguably the best passing goal of the season so far – Ben collected the loose ball and returned the ball to Sam, who hit a midfield splitting pass to Reece in acres of space. Reece used this space to his advantage and drove forward towards the Ospreys goal with menace. Looking up, he crossed into the box where both Ben and Sam had continued their supporting runs. Timing his run to perfection, Ben stroked the ball past the Ospreys keeper to extend the Vipers lead to 2-0 at the half way point.
Langhy returned to defence for the third quarter and need too be alert right from the start to help repel the Ospreys strikers who were looking to try and reduce the deficit. This onus on attack left more space for the Vipers to exploit and when the ball broke to Reece midway inside the Ospreys half, he ran towards the Ospreys goal and angled a shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 to the Vipers. As the quarter progressed it became evident that excellent performance from the lads was starting to tire them and it allowed the Ospreys to exert some prolonged pressure on the Vipers goal. However, a combination of dogged defending by the midfield and especially the defence, combined with some excellent goalkeeping from Ethan prevented the Ospreys from scoring and the quarter ended with the Vipers leading 3-0.
The Ospreys started the final quarter looking to keep up the pressure they’d built up and were searching for a consolation goal. Again the Vipers defended well, with the midfielders tracking back well to help the defence. A break down the Vipers right appeared to have come to nothing when the Ospreys defence half cleared the ball but some rugged and determined play from Sam smuggled the ball away from two North Shields players. Sam ran towards the bye line, looked up and fixed a right foot cross into the box which the onrushing Reece hit with a first time volley into the back of the net: 4-0 to the Vipers!! As the quarter drew to a close the Ospreys managed to reduce the deficit when their striker went on a mazy run through the Vipers half to score a consolation goal to leave the final result 4-1 to the Vipers.
Man of the Match: Reece Edgar – he’s G-Reece lightening!!

The early morning frost gave way to some unseasonal warm weather as the Vipers looked to welcome the first visitors to their new home pitch. Given that there is no match next week, there was a minutes silence for Remembrance Sunday before the match, which was impeccably respected by both teams.
The Vipers took to the field with Jack France leading the forward line, Sam, Owen and Reece in midfield and Captain Kirby and Swailsey defending Ethan as the last line of defence. The Yellows kicked off and found the Vipers in combative mood, using their strength to take control of the midfield and put pressure on the Cramlington defence from the start. Sam was full of running, looking to pick out the pace of Owen and Reece on the wings. A quick throw in from the left set Sam free near the corner flag. Reece was in support and, after a quick interchange of passes, the ball flashed into the Yellows box but no-one could get the decisive touch and the keeper was quick off his line to gather the ball. Cramlington were finding it difficult to get out of their half such was the Vipers dominance. A couple of long range shots whistled past the uprights of the Yellows goal before the Vipers broke the deadlock – and what a goal it was! Following a quick throw in from Owen on the right, Sam drove towards the corner of the box and picked out Reece, just outside the box. Reece saw the keeper off his line and delivered a sublime chip over the keeper and into the net: 1-0 to the Vipers, who were extremely good value for their lead. From the restart, the game continued in the same vein, with the Vipers refusing to give an inch in the midfield battle and, when required, the defence showing a great robust determination to protect Eth’s goal. Following a clever move down the right, the ball broke to Owen in the box and he dispatched a first time shot past the Yellows keeper to extend the Vipers lead to 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started with Langhy in defence and Ben taking up leading the line. Straight form the kickoff, the Vipers were on the attack again with Sam picking out Owen on the wing. A typical skilful and jinky run ended with a Yellows defender fouling him on the edge of the box. Although the free kick cam to nothing, the speed of the attack would set the tone for the rest of the quarter. The Yellows defence were having difficulty dealing with the pace of Reece and this gained the Vipers a free kick out wide on the left. Sam fired in an excellent free kick that just evaded both Ben and Owen. From the clearance, Cramlington were able to make a rare foray towards the Vipers goal but a tremendous first time clearance from Langhy cleared the danger. Again the Vipers attacked down the right wing with speed and, following some clever play from Owen, Sam dribbled into the right hand side of the box and poked the ball past the keeper to increase their lead to 3-0 at the end of the second quarter.
Cramlington started the third quarter looking to get back into the game, but found James and Langhy on the top of their game, not giving an inch in the tackle and providing both excellent protection for Ethan and a solid base to allow the midfield and Francey to try and extend the Vipers lead. This determination from Cramlington made the game an end to end game in the third quarter and they got their reward when a ball across the Vipers box was bundled past Ethan to reduce the deficit to 3-1 at the end of the quarter. In the final quarter, the Vipers had several chances to restore their 3 goal lead but found the Yellows keeper in excellent form. Owen did manage to get the ball past the keeper but saw his ferocious shot rebound of the foot of the post! Despite this pressure, the lads couldn’t grab another goal and the game finished 3-1.
Man of the Match: Reece Edgar

Sunday saw a local derby as Ashington (manager David's home town) made the short trip to St. Bedes to play The Vipers. The previous meetings between the two sides had been tight affairs with honours pretty much even.
The Vipers started with Ethan in goal, James and Swailsey on defensive duties, Reece, Owen and Sam in midfield and Jack France up front.
The first quarter started with the lads on the attack from the start – Jack France being unlucky not to be able to convert an inviting right wing cross and Owen seeing a tremendous right foot drive hit the base of the post. Reece was looking to use his pace at every opportunity and was linking up well with Sam down the left. From one of these attacks, he found Sam just outside the Ashington box. Sam controlled the ball and unleashed a shot into the top corner of the Ashington net: 1-0 to the Vipers. Thanks to Swailsey, James and Ethan being alert to any danger and demonstrating great tackling, the Vipers midfield and forwards were continuing to ask questions of the Ashington defence. Towards the end of the quarter, the Ashington defence only half cleared the ball, which fell to Sam in the middle of the opposition half. Again he showed good control, ran forward a couple of steps and dispatched a shot into the bottom corner of the Ashington goal :2-0 to the Vipers at the end of the first quarter.
For the second quarter, Swailsey moved to take up the striking duties, with Ben on the left wing and Langhy coming into defence. Straight from kick off, Ashington made their attacking attentions clear, and put the Vipers defence under immense pressure as they looked to reduce the deficit at the earliest opportunity. The midfield and defence coped well with these attacks, closing down the space and showing good strength in the tackle, but were helpless when the ball broke in the box to an unmarked Ashington player who swept the ball into the roof of the net :2-1. The Vipers were still posing an attacking threat and forced a number of corners. An excellent corner from Ben caused all sorts of panic in the Ashington defence and in trying to clear the ball, an Ashington defender scored and own goal to increase the Vipers lead to 3-1.
The play really was end to end – the Vipers trying to extend their lead further with Ashington using their pace on the wings to counter attack quickly. It was Ashington who made the next breakthrough with a fantastic shot from inside the box which gave Eth no chance – 3:2 to the Vipers at the half way point.
The third and fourth quarters were again tight affairs. Ethan showed great handling and was alert to any danger being quick off his line. James, Langhy and Swailsey kept Ashington at bay with some tiger like tackling. In midfield and attack, Sam, Owen, Reece, Francey and Ben were using their strength and skills to help the defence whilst also trying to unlock the Ashington defence and the Vipers were unlucky not to extend their lead when Sam’s curling shot from the edge of the box came back off the inside off the post with the Ashington keeper beaten.
The game ended with the Vipers doggedly protecting their lead. The lads battled well, showing grit, determination and great strength to deservedly win 3-2. David and Allan were smiling ear to ear with the effort and attitude from THE VIPERS!
Man of the Match – James (you ain't getting passed) Kirby

The weather was fantastic as the lads travelled to North Shields to play top of the league Whitley Bay and after the previous result against Ellington, David and Allan stressed the need for a positive performance from the Vipers.
Right from the off, Whitley Bay showed why they were top of the league, showing some incisive passing and good movement. Early in the first quarter, Whitley Bay used this slick passing to create a chance for their forward on the edge of the box and he gave Ethan no chance to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. The Vipers quickly regrouped and started to compete with Whitley Bay, working really hard closing down the space available to the Blues’ defence and midfield and putting in some tough tackles on their forwards. This all action display from the lads was working as they got a foothold in the game and stopped the Blues from extending the lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Vipers started where they finished, sticking with their men, tracking back well and showing good strength in the tackle. In defence, Langhy, James and Swailsey were alert and managing in protecting Eth’s goal well. Any chances that the Blues did manage to create were expertly dealt with by the safe hands of Ethan. Owen, Sam and Reece were running their legs off to pinch the ball back from Whitley Bay and create chances for Francey upfront, who was working hard to pressurise the Blues defence. The lads managed to keep the score at 1-0 until near the end of the quarter when a lose ball in the box was finished well by Whitley Bay to extend their lead to 2-0 at half time.
This was an excellent, battling performance from the lads against the league leaders and each and every one of them had worked their socks off. The effort the lads had shown in the first half started to show in the last two quarters as they understandably started to tire. This created more space and Whitley Bay were able to use their passing game to good effect, scoring a further two goals in each of the last two quarters to make the final score 6-0.
After the result against Ellington, David and Allan asked for an improved performance against the league leaders. Each one of the lads stepped up straight away and responded positively, getting stuck in and working hard for each other – a real team performance. Well done fellas!
Man of the Mach - Owen Holliday

The Vipers were away on Sunday, playing a team who had been in the same league as the lads last year. Both games at Under 8’s had been tight affairs, with the odd goal in five deciding both games and the honours even at one win each.
With a strong and blustery wind blowing straight down the pitch, David started the match with Ethan in goal, James and Langhy providing the defensive cover, with Sam, Owen and Reece in midfield supporting Swailsey in attack. In the first quarter, the lads had the wind at their back and started really strongly, putting the Ellington defence under all sorts of pressure. Reece demonstrated his pace down the left wing and Sam prompting from midfield. Only a case of great goalkeeping and unlucky finishing stopped the Vipers from scoring. However, Ellington broke once or twice with menace and were unlucky not to score when they hit the bar from close range. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 0 – 0 as neither side had broken the deadlock.
Ben started the second quarter on the right hand side of midfield with Jack France starting up front. Right from the start of the quarter, with the wind behind them, Ellington turned the tables on the Vipers with wave after wave of attacks and the boys were having difficulty in clearing their lines. However, unlike the Vipers, Ellington didn’t suffer the same bad luck with finishing and had raced into a 3 – 0 lead at the half way point.
In the half time break, David and Allan reminded the boys of the importance of passing and working hard for each other which had served them so well in the game against Morpeth and the first quarter of this game. With this in mind, the Vipers started the third quarter in determined mood, looking to get straight back into the game. This time their determination paid off as Jack France scored to reduce the deficit make it 3 – 1. However, almost immediately Ellington restored their 3 goal advantage when the Vipers failed to clear a near post corner and the quarter finished with Ellington leading 4 – 1.
In the final quarter, the Vipers were again playing into a headwind. Despite this, they started to take the game to Ellington and reduced the deficit to 4 – 2 when Ben played a delightful, defence splitting pass to Owen who made no mistake from just inside the box and then, in a move borrowed straight from his Dad at Filey, celebrated by swinging his shirt above his head! Unfortunatley the lads couldn’t manage to score any more and the game ended 4 – 2 to Ellington.
Man of the Match - Ethan Poland

After a couple of excellent performances, but tough results, Sunday saw the Vipers take the short trip to Morpeth to play the Hornets. The overnight rain was expected to leave the pitch greasy but, as the lads arrived prior to kick off, it became clear they would also have to deal with a pitch that was overgrown.
David started the match with Ethan in goal, James and Langhy providing the defensive cover, with Sam, Owen and Reece in midfield supporting Jack France in attack. Both teams started brightly but, due to the length of the grass, were having a few difficulties with judging their passes. The Hornets attacks were few and far between but the few times they did adventure into the Vipers half, both Langhy and Captain Kirby were bright and alert to the threat and cleared the ball well. The lads looked to attack down the wings with Owen’s and Reece’s pace but couldn’t create any clear cut chances, apart from a well struck Jack France effort, which the keeper did well to tip over the bar. As the quarter drew to a close Reece played Sam in down the left wing – Sam ran into the Hornets box, evaded a couple of challenges and cut back the ball for Jack France to finish off a lovely move – 1:0 to the Vipers at the end of the quarter.
Ben started the second quarter on the right hand side of midfield with Swailsey slotting into defence. Right from the start, the Vipers showed they’d got the measure of the pitch with some decisive, attacking passing and running. From one of these moves, Reece broke like lightening down the left wing and cut into the box before dispatching a lovely shot into the Hornets nest – 2:0 to the Vipers. The score didn’t stay that way with Jack France getting his second with a brave finish in a one on one with the Hornets keeper before Sam helped himself to a cheeky 5 minute hat-trick, including a cracking finish from outside the box. At the half way point, the Vipers led 6-0.
The Vipers had been so dominant in the second quarter that David had a tactical reshuffle at the start of the third quarter – one defender supported by a deep lying midfielder, rather than the two defenders. Jack France dropped back into midfield and Swailsey taking up the striking duties. It proved to be a master stroke – not wanting to be outdone in the goal scoring charts, Jack struck a hat-trick with three clinical, powerful finishes. Throughout the match, the defenders had done such a tremendous job defending Eth’s goal that he’d very little to do. The few chances the Hornets had created he’d dealt with, as usual, in a calm and assured manner. However, he was helpless to stop the Hornets scoring what was to be a consolation goal and the quarter ended 9-1.
The lads had given everything in the first 3 quarters and the long grass was starting to sap their energy. The Hornets made a couple of forays upfield into the Vipers half but again the defence dealt with the threat. Despite their tiring legs, the lads managed to fashion a few more chances & Jack Swailes took advantage to hammer home his fourth of the game to make the final score 10-1 to the Vipers.
The boys showed how far they have progressed today – slick, early passing on the attack which the Hornets couldn’t deal with, intelligent decision making in looking for a team mate when the play broke down or they found themselves in a dead end as well as robust tackling. Even the watching Andy Carroll couldn’t have failed to be impressed!!
Man of the Match: Jack Swailes – 4 goals, 3 positions, nuff said!!

The sun was shining on Sunday as the Vipers played against last years Premiership champions at St. Bedes, who were yet to concede a goal in their matches so far this season. Ben was missing through illness and the lads kicked off the first quarter with Ethan in goal, Swailsey and Captain Kirby in defence, a midfield trio of Reece, Owen and Sam with Jack France up front. The boys started brightly, closing down the Celtic midfield well, not allowing them any space. When Celtic managed to create any chances, the defence and midfield were alert to the danger and managed to clear the ball. One of these clearances fell to a Celtic midfielder midway inside the Vipers half – he controlled the ball and had a long range shot which Eth had covered, only to find the Celtic centre forward had remained in the box and he nipped in to give Newcastle the lead 1-0.
The second quarter started in the same vein as the first – Celtic looking to use good passing and movement to create chances with the Vipers working hard in midfield to close down the space, with the defence of James, Langhy and Swailsey, making important interceptions and showing good strength in the tackles. The Vipers were also looking to try and attack when the opportunity arose with some nice passing between Sam, Reece, Jack France and Owen almost creating a couple of counter attacking one on ones with the Celtic goalkeeper. The end of the quarter was approaching fast as the Newcastle winger broke into the left hand side of the Vipers box. As the Vipers looked to repel another attack the Celtic player went down in the area which the ref deemed as a trip, resulting in a penalty which was duly scored, making the score 2-0 to Celtic at the half way mark.
The last two quarters saw the boys naturally tire after running themselves into the ground, which meant Ethan had to be alert and on his toes throughout. Newcastle took full advantage of the increased space available to them, scoring several more goals. Despite this, the Vipers almost scored when Sam set Jack France free and only the legs of the onrushing Celtic keeper stopped the ball from going in the net. The match finished 6-0 to Newcastle but, given that Celtic were three leagues above the Vipers last year, it was testament to how well the boys had progressed and the hard work they put into the match that they had managed to compete on level terms for much of the match.
Man of the Match - Sam Richardson

The Vipers travelled to Astley High School on Saturday to play Cramlington Juniors. Ben wasn’t available to play as he was off running the Junior Great North Run to raise money for his team mates. Ben a HUGE thank you from us all and really well done!!
The conditions were perfect for the game. The starting line up was Ethan in nets, James and Swailsey at the back, Owen, Reece, Sam across the midfield and Jack France leading the attack up front. The Vipers were caught cold at the start of the match letting in 3 goals before really getting started. That was unfortunate as when the Vipers came to life they matched Juniors. The Vipers attack sparked in to life with some excellent touches from Jack France. Reece was electric down the left and Owen lively on the right. Swailesy and James settled at the back and looked much more assured. From one of several Viper attacking moves Jack France broke free in the box only to be clearly fouled. Top goal scorer Reece duly stepped up and competently slotted it home 3-1. The Vipers had several more great chances to get right back in the game but the quarter ended 3-1.
Langhy came on at the back to replace Swailesy in Q2. The Vipers looked to keep their momentum going with Jack France continuing his fantastic display up front. His skill and attacking mindset drew several fouls in good positions.
The Vipers midfield had to be on their toes to handle the fast offensive passing of Cramlington Juniors which meant the need for disciplined marking and tracking back. The Vipers were looking to exploit their faster pace down the wings and always looked to threaten. Cramlington continued to pass the ball well and found an opening to end the quarter 4-1.
The last two quarters saw the Vipers continue to battle. Swailsey came back on and used his voice well try and get some defensive discipline during set pieces. Sam, Owen and Reece had covered some miles on the pitch. The chances still came our way despite the Cramlington pressure and Sam was only stopped from scoring a deserved goal by a dreadful bobble as he was about to slot the ball home. The Vipers attacking creativity up front was impressive but the game was out of reach and the boys naturally tired after running their hearts out. We saw some excellent play from the Vipers today against one of the best teams in the league. We saw a great display up front from Jack France that won him the Man of the Match award from both David and the opposition manager. Allan awarded his trophy to Reece for a great display on the left wing.
Man of the Match - Jack France

On Wednesday the Vipers met Blyth Rangers Blacks at St Bedes for an evening kick off. Jack France returned from illness to give David and Allan a full squad to choose from. The Vipers started the first quarter with Ethan in goal, Langhy and James in defence with Owen, Reece and Sam in midfield to provide support to Swailsey up front.
In the first quarter, the Vipers were looking to press the Rangers defence down the wings whilst the Rangers midfield were passing well - which meant the Vipers midfield had to track back a lot to help James and Langhy. Overall, the first quarter was pretty even and it ended 0-0.
David introduced Ben and Jack France to the action and the Rangers kicked off the second quarter with the sun behind them. Again the game ebbed and flowed from end to end as both sides looked to get the breakthrough goal. The Vipers were getting to grips with the slick passing of the Rangers midfield and were unlucky not to score with a fantastic free kick from Jack Swailes, which the Blyth keeper couldn’t hold and neither Ben, Sam or Owen could force the ball over the goal line. The ball was cleared upfield by the Rangers defence and put the Vipers under pressure – the Rangers midfield poured forward and they managed to get the first goal with a well struck shot from just inside the box into the bottom corner: 1-0 to Blyth, which is how the quarter ended.
For the third quarter, Ben moved up to striker with Swailsey dropping back into defence. The Vipers took control from the start – they managed to get their own passing game going with some lovely interchanges between Sam, Ben, Owen and Reece pressurising Blyth’s defence and Swailsey and James demonstrating tenacious tackling and making some brilliant clearances. As the last line of defence, Ethan was as confident and assured as usual, being alert to any threat when Blyth did manage to get into a dangerous position. With the Vipers pressing for the equaliser, the ball fell to Reece, who duly dispatched it beyond the Blyth keeper to equalise : 1-1. The score didn’t stay even for long, Reece continuing his scoring streak by doubling his, and the Vipers, tally for the night with another well struck shot: 2-1 to the Vipers at the end of the 3rd quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Blyth pressed for the equaliser but some fantastic tackles and clearances from Langhy stopped them in their tracks. As the Vipers cleared a Rangers attack, the ball fell to Jack France in the opposition half. He duly turned the defender, advanced into the box and struck a firm shot into the bottom corner : 3-1 to the Vipers.
Blyth realised that time was running out for them to get anything out of the game and put the Vipers under tremendous pressure. Despite some heroic defending from the whole team, Blyth got the breakthrough to reduce the deficit to 3-2. Again Blyth pressed for the equaliser but the Vipers held firm until the end of the quarter to win the match 3-2. Well done fellas!!
Man of the match - Owen Holliday

It was a bright but breezy Sunday morning when the Vipers made the short trip to Blyth to play Cosmos in a cup match. There was a bit of apprehension around before hand as Blyth had played 3 divisions above the Vipers in the U8 league.
David and Allan’s selection options were reduced as Jack France was ill and the boys lined up for the first half with Ethan in goal, Captain Kirby and Swailsey in defence, a midfield trio of Reece, Sam and Owen with Ben up front.
The Vipers started brightly, putting the Cosmos defence under pressure and Ben was unlucky with a good run and dribble which resulted in a shot that hit the bottom of the post. The Cosmos were a strong and physical team but their attacks were being repelled by James and Swailsey, with the midfield doing a good job of pressing the Cosmos when they had possession. Any attacks that did make it through the defence, found Ethans hands to be as safe as ever.
The boys continued with their bright start and Reece’s pace and trickery was causing all sorts of problems down the left wing. Following one of Reece’s mazy runs, the Vipers got a free kick - Ben smacked the ball towards goal and despite the confusion in the Cosmos defence, neither Sam nor Owen could force the ball over the line. The Vipers forced a series of corners and Jack Swailes hit the bar from a great driven corner. The Cosmos defence were under real pressure now as the lads continued to press and Sam dribbled down the left wing and cut into the box but the defence were alert to the danger and intercepted his attempted pass to Ben.
The physical approach of the Cosmos was being matched by the Vipers defence and following a crunching tackle, James got injured. To his credit, just like Reece earlier in the half, he picked himself up and continued on. As the half drew to a close, the Cosmos looked to use the wind to their advantage and they took the lead with a great shot into the bottom corner which gave Eth no chance. Half time came with the Cosmos leading 1-0 but the Vipers still had everything to play for.
The second half started with Langhy taking his usual place in defence and Swailsey reverting to striker in place of Ben. Almost from the kick off the Cosmos doubled the lead with a great finish from their striker. Even at 2-0 down the Vipers continued to take the game to Cosmos but the physical side of the game was beginning to take its toll as both Sam and James picked up injuries, meaning the Vipers were reduced to six players for a portion of the second half. The Cosmos tried to use their extra man to their advantage but the lads continued to battle. James showing his captains qualities and returned to play being injured, but being a man down had meant the boys were tired and Cosmos took full advantage of the tiredness to notch up three late goals to make the final score 5-0.
Every single one of the boys got stuck in today against a strong, physical side. Despite going behind, and having picked up injuries throughout the game, the lads demonstrated grit and determination and showed real character today. They may play for the Vipers but each and every one of the lads played like lions today – well done fellas, we’re all proud of you.
Man of the match – James Kirby

After an excellent summer of football the Vipers season kicked off with a tough home match against Wallsend Boys Club in strong swirling winds. The winds were to play a part in the match. The Vipers had a full complement of nine players available with Jack France only getting back in the country 2am that morning!
The Vipers kicked off with a battling spirit that lasted the full game. The most telling factor of the first quarter was the wind which we played in to. The match started out with two strong teams fighting to establish a break through. The head wind made it difficult to get in to any passing rhythm but the Vipers kept on battling. Ethan who now has to take goal kicks off the ground didn’t let the wind effect him. Kick after kick went exactly where he was aiming. James and Langhy has a lot to do in Q1 as Wallsend pressed. They took advantage of the conditions to end the half 1-0 up.
At the break the Vipers attitude was excellent. They were 1-0 down but they really wanted to get back in to the game. Jack France came on to firm things up at the back and demonstrated good positioning, strong tackling and calm passing. Now with the wind at our backs the Vipers composed themselves and went for it. Sam took control of the central midfield and started to really boss the game. We created a number of excellent chances. Swailesy was much busier and caused the Wallsend defence several problems but the ball just wouldn’t go in. We started to put together some classy moves with an excellent chance coming from a short goal kick to Jack France, who passed across the defence safely and accurately to Captain Kirby who expertly picked out Sam in midfield who threaded the ball to Reece then to Swailesy only to be saved by the keeper. 10 out of 10 for the move which was well worth a goal in anyone’s book. At the half way point the score remained 1-0.
Quarter three started with no let up in the wind. The boys continued to tackle hard but on occasions struggled to clear their line due to the conditions. Ethan continued to pull off great saves to keep us in the match- not least a fantastic save on the post which was expertly cleared off the line by James. Following a spell of Wallsend pressure James broke free from defence and had a run into their half, passed to Swailsey but their keeper saved it. Reece was having a great game and fought hard to try and win the physical midfield battle whilst demonstrating his usual speed and attacking flair. Wallsend continued to press and nabbed two goals to go 3-0; which wasn’t a true reflection of the game.
At this point many players heads would drop but not our boys. At the final interval they still felt they could get something out of the game. Owen was leading the rallying call with a great positive attitude. Qtr 4 started well but Wallsend pinched a goal against the run of play to take us 4-0 down. The boys really didn’t deserve to be on the wrong end of that score line. Langhy was brought on as the sole defender with James passing the captains armband to Sam as he left the field. The extra attacking presence paid off. Swailesy was now taking the corners which were strong and accurate. He used the wind to his advantage curling in a couple of peaches. One of which broke to Reece at an acute angle which he competently slotted home. A MUCH DESERVED consolation goal!
A disappointing result but the boys demonstrated a great attitude and desire to battle until the very end. Sam worked hard in midfield and had some great shots from distance. He deserved the Managers Man of Match award. Ben, Owen and Reece played well on wings. Reece is emerging as a true talent and was awarded Coaches Man of the Match to go with his goal. Ethan again demonstrated how he is the best keeper in mini soccer (probably).
